Type of institution:

Magdalene Laundries

Detail:

The Good Shepherd Sisters opened St Mary’s Home / Laundry in Newry in 1946 although records appear to show that it did not receive any women or girls until 1947. Located at 132 Armagh Road, Newry on the same site as the Marianvale Mother and Baby Institution, it was the smallest of the three St Mary’s Homes / Laundries. It could accommodate around 30 women and girls at any one time with a maximum capacity of 36. The accommodation was registered as a voluntary children’s institution in 1951 and operated alongside the Marianvale Mother and Baby Institution. From 1973, there was also a hostel for female victims of domestic violence on the site. In 1984 the Good Shepherd Sisters sold the site, and it became a centre for victims of alcohol abuse operated by the Sisters of Mercy. The buildings that remained on the site were demolished in December 2021.
